Cultivating Creation Spaces through Place-Making
Sunday, September 25, 2-4pm
led by Brian Riley

This workshop will provide a basic introduction to creating environments that nurture creativity.  Through a balance of group discussion and direct action, we will explore the idea of activating a space, holding space, and intention.  Ideas such as exploiting limitations, everyday magic, and process as a practice will be a skeleton for this engaging afternoon.

Coming from a multi-disciplinary arts background, Brian Riley has combined a passion for community building and cultivating expression in youth with his theatre, music and sculpture. A sense of discovery through play has become the staple in much of his work. Most recently exploration with found object sculpture and theatricalization of the everyday have led him towards creating and hosting beautifully transformative spaces for gatherings, events, and festivals. Adaptability to flow and group engagement are enhanced with his circus, musical, and sculptural background. Some Halifax collaborators include Secret Theatre, Zuppa Theatre, and Heartwood Youth Development, while focusing on his own creative output under the name Even Integers.

You Play Me

This workshop will focus on a process of making performance with headsets. Participants will work collaboratively on a mini project based on the key ideas of theatrical engagement, site responsive creation, and one-on-one performance. Participants should bring an mp3 player.

From Dustin Harvey (Secret Theatre): "I am essentially an actor that works in interdisciplinary art. I come from a theatre background and not a performance art or visual arts background, and that is important to me  because it informs the way my work is read.  I have led work based in Halifax since 2003. Each production I make is about the theatrical while engaging viewers intimately."

The Artist / Producer: “Doing It All”

Freelance performing artists are always looking for opportunities to perform.  These opportunities are sometimes plentiful and other times scarce.  This necessitates not only developing the craft of performance, but becoming skilled at producing, public relations, directing, developing work, etc.  How do we produce and promote while still maintaining a high performance standard?  In this workshop we will discuss the various skills needed to "do it all" and do it all well!

Soprano, Janice Jackson has performed in modern music festivals and concert halls around the world and has sung over 170 world premieres of new works.  She is the Artistic Director of the Halifax based contemporary vocal music society Vocalypse Productions.
